JGR Class 9600

The 9600 class was a type of 2-8-0 steam locomotive introduced in 1913 by the Railway Board as Japan’s first domestically designed heavy freight engine. It was intended to replace imported locomotives and to handle the growing demand for industrial and long-distance freight during the Taishō period. A total of 770 locomotives were built between 1913 and 1926 by Kawasaki, Kisha Seizō, and the Kokura Works. The class served throughout Japan on both mainline and branch freight duties and was often used for mixed trains in rural areas. Withdrawals began in the 1960s, with the last examples retired in 1976, as the last steam locomotives used in the country. Several units have been preserved in museums and parks.
