Falling Steps

描述
Gordon awakens in a mysterious, labyrinthine structure, an illogical domain that defies reason. Try to escape by fighting your way through zombie ambushes and clashing with the lethal Combine forces.



This is my first map ever created using the Hammer editor. It was made to participate in the "Level Design Jam 11" organized by Steve Lee and it was designed with the "escape" theme in mind.

Since the Jam is about Level Design, I focused intensely on core aspects such as: the balancing and variety of encounters, the flow, and the navigation of the map, intentionally giving less priority to the aesthetic side.

Falling down a fleet of stairs symbolizes losing control, which is the emblematic engrossment of losing Barney and Father Grigori (presumably to suicide). So when Gordon fell down the stairs, he experienced a certain setback (maybe to entering Ravenholm considering how stressful it could've been for him) and rising up those stairs was progress and his eventual perseverance of life (saving Alyx, countless resistance members and survivors), insipid the remnant of the combine onslaught, he manages to ascend cautiously

What did I just do? That was awesome dude. Nightmare idea was cool too. I liked the fact that in the nightmare everyone was dead and you had to kill Alyx. Awesome work!

Excellent campaign. The design direction follows exactly what valve game design philosophy. Exploration, plot twist, usage of mechanism, leaving clues on what to do. It's almost perfect.
what's left is to decorate a little bit so it doesnt feel too empty. even that is optional.

Great job on your first map!
The pacing felt really good, and you introduced some cool ideas and encounters. I loved the Combine fight on the suspended platform, and when Alyx called me from behind it actually scared me! Nice touch with the story too, finding out it was all a nightmare was a cool twist.
