Rise of the Samurai - Japanese MAA expansion

描述
DISCLAIMER; READ BEFORE COMMENTING

I am currently in medical school and don't have the means to commission artists for something like this. The use of AI generated unit art is a temporary solution until i have the time to find all my units in historical drawings that are free to use.

Men-at-Arms expansion:

This mod expands Japan’s cultural military roster, bridging the imperial Ritsuryō era and the rise of the Sōryō warrior houses. Each government type receives unique Men-at-Arms reflecting its structure and philosophy

Available from the beginning:
  • Provincial Guards: trained spearmen defending the emperor’s authority in provincial towns, they focus on anti cavalry and also have a slight counter to archer Cavalry. They are Ritsuryō exclusive and available from game start.
  • Private Retainers: loyal household warriors serving the Sōryō (leader of a warrior house). They are of course Soryō exclusive and also available from game start
  • Hiya Kyuhei: are fire-arrow archers that also support units in battle tough their main focus is sieging enemy holdings and castles. They were deadly effective against japans wood buildings in the heian era but lost their effectiveness in snowy weather. Available to everyone from game start.

Special Scenarios:
  • Samurai Kyūhei: samurai foot archers, sadly misrepresented in today's media as a rarity, was the standard for dismounted samurai. In this mod they will be unlocked through having the Būshidō-Code tradition; obtainable when founding the shogunate which will also unlock the regular samurai forces in the vanilla game.
  • Ronin: lit. "Masterless Samurai" are wandering the world after having lost their lord or honour, they are the outcasts of society and many thus turned to crime. They can be hired from game start as of now (might change in the future) and can be exclusively hired by wandering adventurers as cheaper alternative to heavy footmen but they are less in numbers.
  • Imperial Guard: elite warriors armed with Naginatas; sworn to the emperor they form his personal bodyguard corps. In the sense of the mod they are fieldable units which can be hired by holding the Chrysanthemum Throne Title (aka. being the Ten'no of Japan), available from the start and free unless raised.
  • Imperial Cavalry: heavily armored horsemen personally chosen to serve the Emperor. They represent the pinnacle of discipline and power within the imperial army. They can be recruited only by holding the Chrysanthemum Throne (as the Ten'no of Japan).

Late Medieval innovation units:
  • Yari Ashigaru: commoners trained for fighting in tight spear-formations that formed the backbone of any army in the late heian/early kamakura era. Can be unlocked by researching the "Gunsei" cultural innovation.
  • Nodachi Samurai: rare battlefield shock infantry wielding massive great katanas to cut their way through enemy lines, tho rarely fielded in actual battles they are a cool unit most know from Total War: Shogun 2. Can be unlocked by researching the "Gunsei" cultural innovation.

Q&A

Can this mod be played without the All-under-Heaven DLC?
Yes, BUT - while certain units like Rōnin or Hiya Kyūhei are not bound to governments or titles, others are including the Retainers and Provincial Guards which are bound by government type and thus are not accessible without DLC.

How compatible is it with other mods?
Very. It should not interfere with any other mods but be aware that cultural army mods might overlap tho i have not tested this myself. Also be aware for mods that change the Bushido-Code tradition as that might cause the Samurai Archers not to be available.

Crusader Wars?
No!

Is it Safe-game compatible?
Yes it is and it should not cause any problems since it only adds MAA

- Replacing AI art except MAA icons with historial scans of sources from the Kyōtō national archive - Archer Nuns (Archer role) - Onna-bugeisha (Spearmen probably

@JamesANGLOC no, you can keep your save, it only adds MAA so it should be compatible without any issues

Is it necessary to start a new game to use this mod?

@Branok due to time constraints i don't have the capability to look through the gamefiles for triggers and exceptions to implement that. Currently you NEED the Chrysanthemum throne title to get them. No way around that as of now.

@pandaling warrior nuns are planned as archers paid with piety. Onna Bugeisha are a difficult thing to implement because japan doesn't really need a third cultural heavy infantry unit, they would probably end up as spearmen which doesn't technically do them justice, considering those were well trained in multi-arms combat. I am thinking of a solution for them.

About AI art, it is not a permanent solution and i would like to replace them with art of high resolution scans from drawings and illustrations of historical heian, kamakura and early sengoku period scrolls via the national museum in kyōtō. I simply don't have the time right now to go through that and search for every unit i currently have (most are grounded in history or slightly altered but especially the imperial guard was defacto different then portrayed in the mod).

Question, would it be possible to make it so that if I as a member of the Yamato Dynasty take the Mandate of Heaven, use the Imperial MAA?

Love it. could we get onna bugeisha and warrior nuns? loved those from shogun

While its good to always be very anti AI i think it has uses and this is a good one. They look serviceable but i do wonder if ir would be better to take it from online sources. that's my opinion tho.

@Beep thanks for the nice feedback there, trust me, i got flamed to hell and back for using AI, not on this mod but another MAA project that would have added Kerns, Fyrds etc. but i never released it.

i am very thankfull for the positive feedback everyone has given ^^
