JGR Class 8620

The Class 8620 was Japan’s first mainline steam locomotive designed and produced domestically. Introduced in 1914 under the Railway Board, it featured a 2-6-0 wheel arrangement, superheated boiler, and Walschaerts valve gear. A total of 672 units were built by Kawasaki, Kisha Seizō, and Hitachi between 1914 and 1929. The design offered good power, smooth running, and easy maintenance, making it suitable for passenger and mixed-traffic work across the network. The 8620 served nationwide for several decades, from Taishō-era expresses to post-war local services, and became one of the most familiar steam locomotives in Japan.
