In early 1943, the forests around the wayside railway town of Sedjenane became a key battleground for control of the route from inland Tunisia to the coastal port of Bizerte.

At the Battle of Sedjenane, British and German paratroopers met in combat for the first time in the war. It was during these engagements that the Germans reportedly began giving the British airborne the nickname, “Red Devils.”
