The long, but not-so-awaited, sequel to gm_reactor!

Experience the fun of blowing up a nuclear reactor!

Hello any possible person who stumbled upon this map on the workshop. Welcome to Perspective Research Site 03! This is a map made around the premise of an interactive boiling water reactor, and is a sequel to the dumpster fire of a map I last made known as gm_reactor. This map can also be used for roleplay, I guess? Anyway, let's get to talking about the contents that this map offers!

Features:

This map has a lot of interactive elements to it and a lot of them are related to the reactor itself. Some of the features include, but are not limited to:

- Controllable boiling water reactor (duh)
- A basic camera system
- A working crane straight from Half-Life 2
- Okay most of these are related to the reactor function I'll go over them later :sob:

This map is not the most detailed ever, but there are custom made posters and stuff around the map that you can read.
There's also some lore stuff related to the older map, but this map isn't really lore focused.

ALSO ATTENTION, do NOT take the information about radiation dosages and what to do in a radiation event 100% seriously because I am NOT an expert in the subject and only drafted them together based on information I know.

Reactor Operation:

Alright, I must admit: the reactor controls and other stuff are not self-explanatory. That is why I must explain how and why certain stuff works. Let's start off with the controls found in the control room itself.

Here you can see a very basic overview of the reactor control panel buttons. Let's go from left to right.

First up, we have the water control buttons. They basically just control how much water is going into the pressure vessel. Water gets heated and turned into steam in the reactor. It also acts as coolant. What you want is to have a balance of control rod insertion and water going into the core for optimal performance. Too little water, and the temperatures get higher. Too much, and the reactor cools down too much, not producing enough steam to spin the turbines.

After that, we have the control rod buttons. These control the insertion of the control rods. Control rods act as brakes in a nuclear reactor, slowing down neutrons, and thus, slowing down reactions. Lower them, and the reactor core starts cooling down. Raise them, and the reactor core starts heating up.

Following that, we have the coolant injection button. When this button is pressed, a decently sized amount of very cool liquid nitrogen gets injected into the pressure vessel, bringing down the temperatures a notch. This is to be used when the core temperature needs to be reduced fast!

Next up, the emergency shutdown button. This button will force the control rods down, instantly slowing down reactions. They are, however, tipped with graphite that can raise reactivity in the core for a moment. This button is very very risky to use.

Last, but not least, we have the auto start button. If you ever manage to stall the reactor, which will displayed to you on a small screen, press this button once and wait for it to do its thing. It will try to bring the reactor back to operation, but it might need some manual assistance. In the turbine hall you can find a button. During the auto start process, the turbines will be automatically disconnected from the electrical grid. To bring it back on the grid, wait for the connect authority light to turn green and press the button. Failing to do so properly will result in a turbine failure and the reactor will be powering the facility with its auxiliary turbines.

Power Management Guide:

For now, the power management mechanic is pretty self-explanatory, as I haven't yet made it SUPER in-depth yet. Basically, you can turn off power to certain elements (such as lights and whatnot) in the facility using the buttons found on the control panel behind the main control panel. Every element that can be controlled is labeled as what it is, and every label also has an indicator light. When the light is on, it means that there is power to said element. When it is off, there is no power going to that element. The two buttons for each element turn power to said element on and off. Now, some of these elements are more critical to the function of the reactor, such as the water circulation pump element. Turning this off, will shut the pump down, not allowing water to enter the reactor core. This causes temperatures to spike up rapidly, as water is also used as a coolant. Anyway, there will be more updates to this, so stay tuned!

IN CASE OF A DISASTER OCCURRING AND YOU WANT SOME LIGHTS BACK ON

Go into the basement of the facility and locate a small room with a generator and a radiation safe room. There, you can find a panel that is closed until the auxiliary generators have run out of steam to spin their turbines with. Once it opens, just press E on the panel to start up the generator, and it will bring some of the lights in the facility on.

TO EXTINGUISH REACTOR FIRES

A new mechanic introduced after a suggestion by a commenter, you can now put out the inferno that is the reactor after a disaster! First, ensure that the generator in the basement is engaged. After that, turn power to the fire suppression pump, and then, press the fire suppression button. This will start flooding the fire with a lot of fire suppressants. After some time has elapsed, the fire will be put out.

Improvements over the last map

There is a reason why I made this map. It is because the first map was objectively just bad. It was literally my first big map project ever, so I was a little inexperienced and dumb (still am). What things does this map improve on or fix? Probably no one asked that, but I'll tell you anyway :D

First of all, the performance is so so so much better. The performance of the first map was SO bad. But this map has actually good performance, even with a bunch of mods. I got a stable FPS of around 200-300 at all times on this map, compared to the 60-100 on the last map!

Second of all, the reactor mechanics make much more sense and are slightly more realistic, but still not exactly 100% realistic. That's about it.

Third of all, the architecture of this map makes much more sense. I don't know how I'd explain this, but this map actually has more realistic architecture and stuff that an actual nuclear power plant would have.

Anyway that's it. By the way, I can and will update and add stuff to this map, if people suggest changes or additions. Don't be shy, comment all you want! Also PLEASE do comment about any issues you might run into, so I can fix them!

BY THE WAY, THIS MAP HAS HDR SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you have issues with the cubemaps, type mat_specular 0 into the console.

Some features/mechanics I'd maybe like to add and suggested features:

Look I'm really lost, I don't have any project to work on now. So, I might just start adding suggested features and stuff soon (no promises though). Anyway, here is a list of some potential new additions that might come later:

- Reactor refueling (suggested by charalinedreemurr)

If you have some cool suggestion or idea that you would like to share, DO comment!

could you make it where your able to explode the turbines? and also would be nice if you could actual control rodels that are able to jump up and down before it explodes. Also GREAT map i love it!

@bebra -_- If you meant that I made the map INSIDE CHERNOBYL, which was actually a big inspiration initially, nope. But if you meant whether or not I would be making a map about the Chernobyl NPP, I would have to answer that maybe not. It would take months to make, considering I’d have to go through tons of records and schematics to recreate it.

Hi, do you make Chernobyl NPP?

@toph As another person had the same issue and discovered it was one of their addons, I suggest you check if you may have some kind of addon causing this:steamthumbsup:

@Odysseus This is very real, but this way, no green house gasses get released!!!:steamhappy:
