Restaurant Bastei Dresden

描述
The Restaurant Bastei in Dresden.

Located on the Prager Straße shopping boulevard, this restaurant and its large mosaic 'Dresden Greets Its Guests' was the first thing visitors saw when leaving the city's central train station.

Constructed in 1968/69 on the edge of Lenin Square, it was part of a group of buildings, including the hotels Bastei, Königstein and Lilienstein, all named after famous landmarks in the nearby Saxon Switzerland national park.

The hotel complex itself was part of the larger Prager Straße ensemble, the pulsating, modernist heart of Dresden, just south of the historic 'Old Town.' The gorgeous Rundkino, which FroehlicheForelle recreated for WRSR, an imposing Lenin monument and Hotel Newa, with its beautifully ornamented concrete side facade, were other sights in the area.

Since reunification, the Prager Straße has become unrecognizable. An overwhelming, haphazardly arranged clutter of bland glass buildings is now the first thing you see when you leave the station. The mosaic no longer greets Dresden's visitors because it is hidden away in a back alley.

The Restaurant Bastei now houses a TK Maxx and has been stripped of all of its distinctive features, including the concrete lamellae on the facade and the folded roof.

My model is not entirely faithful to the original as it was impossible to find useful pictures of the building's north and west side, which was an outdoor dining area separated from Lenin Square by an ornamented concrete wall. The back of the building had some sort of large ventillation grilles, but due to a lack of photos, I just continued the lamellae.

Each side (except the delivery area) has six entrances, like the architects intended. Not all of them were actually used in real life, but if you look closely at old photos, you can see the frames of the unused doors.

The neon sign was removed ages ago, so I had to use an old picture for the texture, hence the poor quality. I couldn't be bothered to recreate a high-definition version. If you don't like it, or if you don't want German writing in your saves, you can get rid of it with the attached skin pack.
