The Myōgi class of battlecruisers was designed following the Japanese Diet passing the Emergency Naval Expansion Bill, authorizing the construction of one battleship (Fusō) and four armoured cruisers, to be designed by British naval architect George Thurston in 1911. She, alongside the battleship Kongō in Britain, while her sisters Yakushi and Kaikoma were to be laid down in Japan. Myōgi's class of ships were, for all intents and purposes, similar to the Kongo class. With similar dimensions. Myōgi had a smaller beam by a meter, and had an A-X-Y layout, being the only Japanese dreadnought battleship to have this layout. Myōgi entered service in 1915, and assisted in bombarding German defenses and fortifications in German New Guinea and Samoa. In 1917, Myōgi was caught in rough waters off Formosa, and the top of her forward tripod mast collapsed, killing 6 and injuring 14. Myōgi wouldn't sail during World War One again. In 1922, it was decided to remove the battleships Kawachi and Settsu from service, along with all of Japan's pre-dreadnoughts to keep the Myōgi class in service.
