Town gasworks were common in the uk during the second half of the 1800's until the 1960's when all houses were converted from town gas to natural gas. Street lights had by this time been converted to electric.

Coal was heated in the retort house giving off a gas which was condensed and scrubbed then passed through a purifier
before being stored in metal tanks. The tank was held up by chains and weights. Remove the weight and the tank dropped compressing the gas and forcing it down pipes into the local town

The heated coal once cooled becomes coke - which was used as fuel both for the retort house furnace and also sold on to the local coal merchant for delivery. Tar was another by-product. The gasworks initially paid the tar merchant to take this away but later distilled in Vats on site and sold.
