The ION BUTTERFLY is an ION only Spaceship / Lander / Rover. It is limited to operating around MINMUS and is not MUN rated, the MUN's Gravity Field should be avoided. It must be manually launched. Used by the ION FLEET for MINMUS Missions and to evaluate (rank up) Able Bodied SpaceKerbals of all three classifications. The BUTTERFLY comes with an Ultralight RCS Low Gravity Speeder that's just to much fun to leave home. The BUTTERFLY was designed to both test an ION Pilots ability and also exploit the capabilities of the ION Engines. The second Stage forces a Pilot to discover the optimum positioning of an ION Vessel to complete Orbits with the IONs. Once at MINMUS it excels in every way. It is ideal for exploring MINMUS and capable of multiple landings. It makes an ideal Rover there and you can just about point it and fly it where you want to go. It carries a Sci Lab Jr that returns to Kerbin with the Reentry Capsule and enough storage to set up multiple Science Stations.
There is an Action Group to manipulate the Panels.

Mastering the BUTTERFLY is an important Milestone for any ION Pilot, to master it, is to master all of them.
It's like one one those little Sailing Dinghies or a Hobie Cat. The BUTTERFLY is tricky to fly at times by design. When a Pilot can get the BUTTERFLY into an elliptical Orbit, then pick the sweet spot on it to make MINMUS with a burn under 8 minutes, then Capture MINMUS on IONs they will have the ability to get the most out of any of the ION FLEET Vessels.

This is also the Craft where ION FLEET Pilots learn and practice one of the most basic navigational disciplines, the use of TARGET MODE while setting up Maneuvers. To enter TARGET MODE while setting up a maneuver use the TAB key to cycle through Targets, use the Twiddle key (~) to exit and snap back to the Player's Vessel.
To really dial in captures and intercepts to within yards, the IONs are ideal for making adjustments in route. It's like after throwing a Curve-Ball you run beside it at 92 MPH making adjustments to gently guide it into the zone. While in transit go to the Map and cycle to your target and select and try different Navigational Options (directions) and watch and see which move the numbers the way you desire. You can plot ... GUIDE ... Ship to Ship Intercepts to within yards doing this.


ION NAVY FALCON REENTRY QUALIFICATION
This is the ION NAVY's Navigational Qualification it normally requires using both TARGET MODE Map techniques when setting up the shot. It requires placing this X-1500si in an Orbit around KERBOL @ 30,000,000,000 with the Menu and taking the shot.
