69 locomotives of this type were built between 1929 and 1953. All orders until 1947 were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works. A few years later, when more were needed, the American company had stopped manufacturing steam locomotives, and the last 30 had to be built in Japan by Mitsubishi. Nine locomotives—seven Japanese and two American—were restored in the 80s to be able to serve in emergency situations. They were stored at the Temuco Depot, where they still exist, albeit no longer operational, except for No. 820. They were used on passenger and freight trains between Santiago, Talca, San Rosendo, Temuco, and Cartagena. Later, especially after the arrival of the Japanese locomotives, they were also used as far away as Concepción and Puerto Montt. Once electrification reached Concepción, their use was restricted to the south of the country. Is it said that this type of engine "is as suitable for freight trains as it is for pulling passenger trains, something that is not often the case." In their final years of regular use, their bases of operations were the depots in Temuco, San Rosendo, and Concepción.
