The Gewehr 71/84 was Germany's first repeating infantry rifle, a significant evolution of the single-shot Mauser 71. Adopted in 1884, it featured an eight-round tubular magazine under the barrel and could also be used as a single-shot rifle via a magazine cut-off. Chambered for the black powder 11mm Mauser cartridge, it was a transitional weapon rendered largely obsolete by the advent of smokeless powder and the French Lebel rifle in 1886, and was replaced by the Gewehr 88 shortly after.
