H2Real – Realistic Hydrogen for Space Engineers 🚀

⚠️ Requires Heat Management System – H2Real is an official expansion module for it.

Hydrogen in vanilla Space Engineers is… let’s just say a bit too magical.
H2Real fixes that with a grounded, science-based rework of how hydrogen tanks, generators, engines, and thrusters actually behave.

✅ Core Features
- Tank capacity equalization – gas amounts scale properly with tank size.
- O2/H2 Generator realism – production rates and power consumption rebalanced based on real electrolysis math.
- Hydrogen Engines – realistic fuel-to-power ratios, heat buildup, and O₂ consumption.
- Hydrogen Thrusters – adjusted thrust and fuel use to match real exhaust physics.
- O₂ requirement – both engines and thrusters now need oxygen to run.
- Overheating consequences – push your tech too far and face the fallout:
• Thrusters explode their emitter at 500 °C (20% grid damage, thruster disabled).
• Engines fail at 300 °C (still nearly double real combustion engines).

H2Real is designed for experienced players who want a true engineering challenge.
If you install this mod, be prepared to:
- ⚡ Suffer through enormous O2/H2 generator power demand.
- 🚫 Forget about mobile refueling stations – no more carrying an entire hydrogen plant on a rover or small ship.
- 🏭 Build stationary production facilities and stockpile fuel before attempting serious missions.
- 🌍 Struggle against gravity – a single-stage launch won’t cut it anymore. Learn why most real rockets use staged launches… and start designing your own.

If you’re looking for casual plug-and-play hydrogen, this mod is not for you.
If you want to feel the pain – and satisfaction – of real rocketry, welcome aboard. 🚀

I wish more servers used mods like this. I want to overcome the true challenges of engineering with others. Great mod, truly the first of its kind.

You've re-tuned the Hydrogen engines based on combustion engines (which makes sense given their visual design), but what about the Protoech Fusion Reactor?

Speaking of Prototech, would you make it so that Ion Thrusters produce heat as well?

any chance we might get a version of this that doesnt also introduce heat management?
because i'd love to play with the H2 changes without having to overhaul my blueprints/designs to account for heat ...

Thx for great mod and for linear H2/O2 consmption ratio multiplier in configs.


@HarbingerDawn try it with mods like
1. "any big planet" ( example Mars 1;10, diameter 680KM),
2. real orbit ( on Mars with diameters of 680km gravity distance = 630KM with ),
3. gas heavy ( 1ML H2 = 11.1 T, 1ML O2 = 177.7 T )
4. aerodynamic physics.

+If you make H2/O2 consmption ratio example 1:4 or realistic 1:8, you will get realy interesting astro-navigation. For space flights, I simply have to orbital refueling-station.

+If refuelling station into Mars gravitation Zone you must make it as trully orbital moving in free fall.

+ if you do all of the above : you will need a network of satellites

I have all of it ( ratio H2/O2 1:4,189. refuell station orbit at 200KM ) : now it's completely different, more interesting and challenging, but possible from a gameplay.

Well, because of the reasons mentioned by you, @HarbingerDawn, we're used to building enormous ships on the planets. That's why with this mod, staged launch might actually become a thing.

The argument about multi-stage launch vehicles seems a bit silly in this context. The delta-V required to reach space in SE is minuscule compared to reality. In real life, while you need a large rocket to carry meaningful payloads into orbit from Earth, even the paltry Apollo LM ascent stage was sufficient to launch from the lunar surface into lunar orbit, and that's a bit more comparable to the state of affairs in SE.
