Steven Jacob was a mechanic who had long fought alongside the communist rebels in the Grand Chien region.
For the past few months, he had been recruited by A.I.M. as a weapons modification specialist.
Optimistic during missions, he was known for his speed and efficiency.
His teammates quickly nicknamed him “LaPince” — the Cutter — after his favorite tool, an old pair of wire cutters he always carried, and for his uncanny ability to jury-rig, repair, or sabotage almost anything under pressure.

One day, during an ambush north of Grand Chien, the squad he was attached to was caught off guard in Pantagruel.
His commanding officer, Staff Sergeant Vladimich “Marx” Milan, gave him a very specific order: handle the crisis with what LaPince did best — repair and create.

The mechanic grabbed his gear and rushed west, where the Legion’s forces were advancing into the city.
Pantagruel’s power grid was down, and he had an idea to support his comrades.
In the near-total darkness, he sprinted to an old backup generator still connected to the market square.
He pulled out his toolkit and went to work.

A few minutes passed...

LaPince returned to the square, where his allies were firing desperately to repel the enemy’s relentless assault.
He slipped next to his superior and whispered a few quick words.
The mechanic had tapped the city’s power grid and hooked in a military PDA — a portable device as mysterious as it was dangerous, capable of linking to an experimental war satellite.

Moments later, the device’s dull green screen came to life in the dark.

— “That’s… that’s not A.I.M. gear, Jacob. Where the hell did you get it?” snarled Marx as he slammed a fresh magazine into his rifle.
— “Old contacts. I rewired it to run off the local grid. But… this won’t be pretty.” LaPince replied.

He confirmed the command.
A piercing whine filled the air. The few neon lights still clinging to life flickered violently, then the entire city was swallowed by absolute darkness.

The Legion soldiers froze in confusion, their advance faltering. But this was only the beginning.

High above, in low orbit, an electronic warfare satellite received the PDA’s signal. Its antennas shifted, and a concentrated microwave beam rained down on Pantagruel.

Seconds later, transformers across the city erupted with muffled thunder.
Streetlamps burst into flames, radios screeched and died, and several enemy armored vehicles shuddered to a halt, their circuits fried.

LaPince watched the chaos unfold, caught between pride and dread.
The total blackout had plunged the city into darkness, but the surge wave now turned every electronic device into a potential death trap.

The staff sergeant studied the scene, his jaw tight.
— “♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, LaPince… you’ve just changed the game. But do you have any idea what this means?” he growled.

Suddenly, a strange noise cut through the night sky, distant but menacing.
Perhaps another power, monitoring the satellite’s activity, had just been alerted...

Without hesitation, Marx pulled two metal canisters from his vest.
He yanked the pins and hurled them to the ground. The grenades burst, spewing a dense white cloud that blanketed the market square.

The smoke spread quickly, forming an opaque wall that blurred and disrupted the enemy’s night vision goggles.

… The rest of the story will be told by Eddie “Buzzsaw” Leson.

Hi, General character stats fix now functions correctly as a mechanic.
