描述
The Altair subclass was designed as a revision of the Ventata class in 1940. Brought about as Caroni's interest in fitting 135mm guns to destroyer sized warships began to reach it's peak, CNR put forth a modified Ventata class design, featuring heavier AA of Caroni's preferred caliber (37mm over the 20mm common on many pre-Civil War designs), a single quadruple torpedo launcher, and three 135mm guns in single mounts. Altair herself would be launched in 1941, and would become the basis for the later Cigno class. Out of nine sisters, Altair contributed the most to the war effort, conducting over 100 sorties between 1941 and 1948. She is credited with sinking Japanese cruiser submarine I-409 with depth charges off the Maldives. Altair would return to Italy in 1948 to be rebuilt with the same 120mm gun layout as Ventata before her. Altair and her remaining six sisters would receive refits to mount cold war era radars, but all of the Ventatas and Altairs would not be rebuilt to field missiles. Altair was renamed to "NS-53" (Nave Scuola 053) in 1963 when the name would be reused for a ship of the Rosalino Pilo class. NS-53 would be scrapped in 1967.
