Canarias-Class Heavy Cruisers

Here is the Canarias-Class cruisers of the Spanish Navy.

Their design was base on the Royal Navy's County-Class heavy cruisers. 2 ships were completed, Canarias and Baleares. During the Spanish Civil War, the Spanish Navy was split between the Republicans and Nationalists, with both ships being seized by the Nationalists. Canarias would serve a long and eventful career, sinking 34 ships during the conflict. Her sister Baleares wasn't so lucky, as she was sunk by Republican ships during the Battle of Cape Palos, the largest naval battle of the war. After the war, Canarias continued to serve with the Spanish Navy, but due to Spain's neutrality during WW2, she would never see any combat. She did however participate in the search for survivors from the battleship Bismarck in 1941. In 1952, she received a refit, with the biggest change being splitting her funnel. She continued to serve in 1970s when she was planned for another refit in cooperation with the US Navy. However, surveyors concluded that she was too obsolete. When plans to make her a museum ship failed, Canarias was decommissioned in 1975 and scrapped 2 years later. One of her main turrets is preserved at the Naval Academy in Marín.
