The Manente degli Uberti class was designed as Italy's first battlecruiser in 1933. Manente and her close relative Cesare Borgia were developed from the same design, while Manente was 30 meters smaller than Borgia, 2 meters thinner, and had 356mm guns, the first guns of this caliber in the Italian Navy. Manente was intended to be a class of six, however the number shrank to four, then two. Uberti was the flagship of the Italian African Fleet stationed in Mogadishu, and had a relatively quiet career before 1940, except for an instance where she threw a propeller blade while conducting training operations off British Yemen. In 1940, Uberti made for Goa, but was harassed by a Japanese submarine on the way there, causing Uberti to instead make for neutral Iran. Upon approaching the coast, Uberti attempted to dock, but hostility from Tehran and Rome caused Uberti to soon be backed up by Borgia, and eventually with enough pressure, Uberti was allowed to dock a week later, and make emergency repairs before heading for Goa a second time, this time successfully. In 1942, Japanese pilots mistook her for the Borgia, and attacked her at night with rockets and dive bombs. Uberti's starboard 120mm near B turret was blown out of it's barbette and into the sea during the attack, however Uberti wasnt critically damaged. Uberti is said to have fired at the planes with her main guns as they flew off, but this is debated. In 1943, she returned to Italy, and was fitted with a more modern radar. Uberti was bombed four times between February and April while in drydock, and she did not see service again until 1949. With the war over, the Italian Navy downsized their fleet of battleships, and it was decided to loan Uberti to Italian East Africa. Now renamed "Addis Abeba", Uberti stayed in service until 1965, when the colony collapsed. Uberti sailed under the cover of night back to Italy, and was scrapped a few months after returning, beginning on January 24th, 1966.
