描述
T-34E (Ekranirovanny)

The T-34E, short for Ekranirovanny ("screened" or "shielded"), was a field-modified variant of the standard T-34 medium tank, enhanced with additional appliqué armor to counter the growing threat of German anti-tank weapons during World War II. It was developed as a stopgap measure to improve survivability without a full redesign of the base vehicle.

Role:
Designed as an up-armored version of the standard T-34, the T-34E was intended to operate in high-risk frontline environments where enemy anti-tank rifles, high-velocity guns, and shaped-charge weapons posed a significant threat. The added armor aimed to increase protection without compromising mobility too drastically.

Specifications:
Type: Medium tank (up-armored variant)
Manufacturer: Various Soviet factories (including Factory No. 183, STZ, and others)
Produced: 1942–1943 (limited production)
Number built: Estimated several hundred (exact number unknown)
Crew: 4 (commander, gunner, loader, driver)

Armament:
Main gun: 76.2 mm F-34 tank gun
Secondary: 7.62 mm DT machine gun (bow-mounted and coaxial)

Armor:
Hull front: ~45 mm base + 15–25 mm appliqué plates
Turret front: Up to ~70 mm with appliqué
Side armor: Up to 40–50 mm with additional shielding

Engine:
Powerplant: V-2-34 V12 diesel engine, 500 hp
Speed: ~45–50 km/h (28–31 mph)
Range: ~300 km (186 mi)

Operational History:
The T-34E saw service primarily in 1942–1943, often with Guard units or in urban combat where additional armor was essential. Though the extra plates improved protection against some German anti-tank rounds and Panzerfausts, the added weight reduced speed and maneuverability. Many crews also reported increased strain on the suspension and drivetrain. As newer models like the T-34-85 entered service, the T-34E was gradually phased out. Nonetheless, it represented a key transitional step in Soviet efforts to counter evolving battlefield threats.
