The County of Berkeley was founded in 1682, named after Lord John and Sir William Berkeley, two proprietors of the Carolina colony. In its many years, it has gone through several administrative changes, the most recent being in 1882. The Sheriff's Office evolved with it, protecting its growing population.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office is comprised of 187 fully sworn officers, 34 full-time civilians, and 3 part-time civilians. BCSO's current sheriff is Sheriff S. Duane Lewis, who has been serving since 2015, with his service in BCSO beginning in 1984. Sadly three officers have died in the line of duty, Deputy Sheriff Marion Wright II, Deputy Sheriff Harvey Middleton, and Constable Robert Hassle.
