The Normandy Landings (codenamed Operation Neptune, also commonly known as D-Day) took place in 1944. It was a large-scale offensive launched by the Western Allies on the Western Front of Europe during World War II as part of Operation Overlord. The battle began on June 6, 1944. In one day, 150,000 Allied soldiers crossed the English Channel and landed in the Normandy region of France. It was the largest beach landing in human history to date. The Normandy Landings started the process of the liberation of France (and later Western Europe) and laid the foundation for the Allied victory on the Western Front.4
