The Battle of Bakhmut, fought between August 2022 and May 2023, was a pivotal and grinding confrontation in the eastern Donetsk Oblast of Ukraine. Situated on key road and rail links, Bakhmut held strategic and symbolic importance for both Russian and Ukrainian forces. What began as probing attacks escalated into full-scale urban warfare, with the Russian Wagner Group and regular army units attempting to seize the city amid fierce Ukrainian resistance. The fighting became a test of attrition and resolve, with both sides pouring men and matériel into a city that had been largely reduced to ruins.

The Russian assault on Bakhmut was spearheaded largely by the Wagner private military company, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. Wagner forces employed frontal assaults, often relying on waves of poorly trained convicts recruited from Russian prisons. This tactic led to heavy casualties, but occasionally gained ground through sheer numbers. Ukraine, in contrast, relied on smaller, agile units with strong artillery and drone support, particularly from the 93rd, 54th, and 3rd Assault Brigades, among others. The urban setting of Bakhmut created a brutal combat environment where control of streets, buildings, and even floors of the same structure changed hands frequently.

Despite repeated Russian attempts to encircle the city from the north and south, Ukrainian defenders managed to keep open vital supply lines through nearby villages such as Chasiv Yar. Throughout the winter of 2022–2023, Ukrainian forces held defensive lines under relentless artillery and infantry pressure. The battle became symbolic for both sides: for Russia, a chance to claim a long-awaited victory in Donbas; for Ukraine, a demonstration of defiance and endurance against superior numbers. Media coverage and official statements portrayed Bakhmut as a modern-day Verdun—devastating, unrelenting, and politically charged.

By May 2023, after more than nine months of combat, Russian forces claimed full control over the ruins of Bakhmut, though fighting continued on the flanks. The Ukrainian military confirmed a partial withdrawal from the inner city, having inflicted what they described as catastrophic losses on Russian attackers. Though Bakhmut was captured, many analysts questioned the cost and strategic value of the victory for Moscow. Satellite imagery showed the city had been virtually obliterated, and Russian units, including Wagner, were severely depleted—leading to internal disputes and later, the Wagner mutiny in June 2023.

In the aftermath, Ukraine launched counteroffensives along the Bakhmut flanks, particularly near Klishchiivka and Andriivka, regaining ground in the surrounding hills. The Battle of Bakhmut has since become a case study in attritional warfare in the 21st century, marked by high casualties, drone proliferation, and trench-style combat reminiscent of World War I. It underscored both the resilience of Ukrainian forces and the lengths to which Russia was willing to go for symbolic victories. Though the city itself was lost, Ukraine’s ability to hold out for so long arguably weakened Russian momentum elsewhere along the front.
