The Russian Army enters the Third Chechen War as the largest formation on the battlefield, but also the most compromised. It still fields divisions of tanks, mechanized infantry, and artillery that dwarf most separatist forces, yet decades of mismanagement and corruption have hollowed out its fighting strength.

Where once Moscow boasted of a “modernized” military, the Army today is a patchwork of conscripts, underpaid contract soldiers, and outdated equipment. Commanders siphon off funds and supplies, black markets thrive inside garrisons, and morale among troops is dangerously low. Despite its numbers and firepower, the Army embodies the decline of Russian power: bloated, mismanaged, and slow to adapt.
