Commodvs Imperator

描述
Relive the gladiatorial exploits of the Roman Emperor Commodus!

Commodus had an intense love for gladiators… so intense that he sought to become one himself. Beginning while his father still lived – the renowned Marcus Aurelius – he fought in hundreds of matches, and by the time he was assassinated by his own personal trainer in 192 AD, the number may have been as high as 1,000.

Historically, Commodus mostly took part in fighting animals: slaying lions, ostriches, elephants, hippopotami, rhinoceros, and a variety of other creatures that the Romans considered to be exotic. But real fights against real people that ended in maiming or death did occur – and Commodus, invariably, was the victor.

In this profile, you take up the mantle of Commodus and prove your mettle as the Augustus by killing 80 others. The combat values are unchanged (except health), so you fight in the arena as normal. However, reflecting your unique status, there are changes to scollo side of things (indeed, according to the historian Herodian, Commodus opted to live among the other gladiators in the Ludus Magnus).

First, as a ruler during a period of imperial stability, you are quite wealthy. Cassius Dio writes that Commodus “received a million sesterces from the gladiatorial fund each day.” The base gold reward has been turned up (not quite to a million…), so you will seldom find yourself wanting for gold.

On the other hand, the senatorial class and many Roman commoners deeply disapprove of you “disgracing” your title with “degrading and disgusting exhibitions.” (in the words of Herodian). Think of Fame as your ability to convince the Roman people that your combats are worth celebrating rather than ridiculing – and beware that in almost every battle you take, you will be bleeding Fame. The bigger and more ostentatious the battle, the more you are prone to losing Fame. Additionally, most Fame costs have been increased, except for skipping matches, which costs nothing (but your fame does have to be in the positive numbers in order to do so)

Commodus is the star of his own show. He will not deign to use most white or brown rarity items, and the shop will usually only sell green or higher after the first few weeks. Furthermore, he does not take part in pit fights or battles in which he is just one on a team of many. Luckily, he has the omniscient trait, allowing you to carefully choose which battles can be handled and which are too dangerous. At base, Commodus only has 35 health, not because he was especially weak, but because a serious enough injury would be sufficient to convince him to give up his true gladiatorial aspirations and return to shooting animals from a safe distance.

But surely, you will always win. Can you make the name Commodus ring across the world?

Roleplay tips:
  • Although you start with a cudgel – the weapon of Hercules – Commodus mainly used sword-and-shield to fight other gladiators (he was in fact left handed, which he was very proud of). In addition, he was allegedly masterful in throwing weapons – among his trainers were “the most accurate of Moroccan javelin men, but he surpassed them all in marksmanship.” That story may be an exaggeration, but you should nonetheless make use of throwing for the true Commodian experience.

  • If you want a greater challenge, try to limit the amount of times you use the Promote ability.

  • Commodus, fighting as a secutor, often fought against retarii. The retarii are closest to the in-game Dormorians, so make sure if you encounter any of them you slay them with extra impunity.

  • Commodus showered himself in honors. Possible historical nicknames for your character are: “Hercules” or “the Roman Hercules”; “the Golden One”; “Conqueror of 1000 Gladiators”; “Captain of the Secutores”; “Pacifier of the Whole Earth”; “the Left-Handed” or simply “Commodus” (he liked his own name; Cassius Dio accuses him of wanting to rename Rome to “Commodiana”). Otherwise you can go the evil route with Senator Marius Maximus’s derisive epithets for him: “the foe of the fatherland”, “the foul gladiator” or simply “the murderer”.

  • You start with a Lion helmet, but you can also equip the Lion Cloak as your cosmetic item!

  • And lastly, remember, you are Commodus. You are not above using dirty tricks or fighting people hopelessly weaker than you. Do whatever it takes to achieve your goal.

Feedback appreciated!

Commodus slayed animals tied to posts, to be exact. He did not, unlike the Gladiators who fought wild animals to the death, fight them when they were capable of fighting back.
