Road Network Map Mod

描述
This mod converts road network into asphalt-like gray color and reflects the road width (by reference to the number of lanes). It also reflects in a similar style airport tarmacs, pedestrian paths (footways), and adds walls and fences. "Track" type roads are shown in brown as if they were unpaved. Bridges come with railings and shading to simulate 3D appearance, tunnels are darker colors. Footways are a lighter color to de-emphasize them.

The main road gray color is a little lighter than in real life to make it easier on the eyes, and have railroads more visible (since the game is about railroads). For the same reason, road edges are a fairly light gray. The colors are set to integrate with my railroad and road track packs. (Note the asphalt gray is slightly lighter than in my road track pack, by design, for the reasons noted).

Steps (staircases) are shown using semi-transparent zebra-style symbol. There is an alternative non-transparent symbol looking more like a staircase included as well (file steps_alt.png). If you like, you can switch to it by renaming the file into steps.png, or changing the file name within the mod.

A couple of big caveats. (1) This is based on OSM tags as carried into the game. The tags as used around the world can be inconsistent, and there are many errors. I have seen places that are marked both as a bridge and a tunnel, for example.

(2) The number of lanes often may not reflect well the actual road width. For example, a dedicated lane that splits off a 4-lane highway leaves 3 lanes on the highway, but its with likely remains the same if another lane joins it a little further. A reduction in lanes as rendered in the game creates an unrealistic change the road width. To reduce the effects of this factor, road widths have been "smoothed", especially for 1-2 lane and 2-3 lane transitions where it was most visible. Also, lane width can vary a bit between cities and countries (one lane can be 3.0-4.0 meters wde).

These are the widths I ended with. 1-lane road: 4.4m, 2 lanes: 8.0m , 3 lanes, 10.0m, 4 lanes, 13.6m, 5+ lanes, 16.0m, wide. 1-lane bridges are much wider (5.8m) as 1 lane on bridges often transitions into 2 lanes. "Track" type roads are always 4.6m wide. Where the number of lanes is not specified, 2 lanes are assumed for all roads, except "road", "service", "residential", "pedestrian", "living_street" and any "link" types, where 1 lane is assumed.

Footways are generally 3.0m wide, 4.4m wide for bridges and tunnels.

A special graphical item is used for "building_passage" type roads.

If you find different widths work better for you, you can change these easily in your local version of the mod.

(3) I don't claim to be an expert in OSM tags and though a lot of checks have been made at various places around the world to see how tags are used, it's possible and in fact likely I missed some use cases. Please let me know...
