描述
Francesco Caracciolo was designed as a super dreadnought by the Italian navy at the tail end of World War One. The only ship of her class to be launched, Caracciolo sat as an incomplete hull for multiple years, until in 1926, Mussolini finally decided to complete the hull as a fast battleship. This conversion was extensive, and only ended in 1933, well after the Italian Civil War removed the PNF from power and replaced it with the Caronist Party, and Ottavio Caroni himself. Caracciolo sailed between the Italian peninsula, Libya, and the Horn of Africa often during the interwar period. In 1940, she put to sea along with the battleships of the Cavour class, Duilio class, and the Cesare Borgia class for the first time, against the Japanese in the Philippines. The battle was long, and Caracciolo rammed and sank one of her own destroyer escorts during the chaos of the night action. The vessel almost collided with Borgia as well, and over the radios began a shouting match between the ship's captains. Although the Italian Pacific Fleet successfully drove off the IJN, it was considered a defeat in Italy due to how incompetent the battle line was. For her performance and the sinking of a friendly destroyer, Captain Antonio Caprile was shot when he returned to Italy. With a new skipper, the vessel sailed only one more time against the Japanese in another inconclusive battle, and she would be forced to return to Italy under Caroni's personal orders to deter the Vichy French Navy. The threat the French posed was significant, but the ships of the French Navy did not ever attempt to engage the Italian Home Fleet until 1944, when the Home Fleet was reinforced by a large portion of the Italian Pacific Fleet, also called back. Caracciolo hit and sank 3 French destroyers off Cagliari in 1945 during a night action. She moved one final time to Tripoli, where she sat for the rest of the war. She was sold for scrap in 1963.
