描述
Cesare Borgia was designed to be the first true Italian fast battleship in 1931. While Mussolini threw the idea out, Caroni's regime endorsed it a year later. three were laid down, and the third - Valerio Constantino - was cancelled before launch, and she was converted into an aircraft carrier. Borgia was launched in 1936, and commissioned in 1938. She would sail with Conte di Cavour in a highly publicized voyage to New York in 1939. During the war against Japan, Borgia often sortied with Conte di Cavour in convoy escorts until 1942, when she and the Italian Main Fleet fought the Kido Butai off Borneo. The battle was Borgia's first, and her extremely powerful 381mm guns caught the Japanese off guard when her salvos nearly crippled Mutsu. Borgia was credited with sinking two destroyers during the battle. She was torpedoed during the engagement, but the torpedo spread fired from Hatsuyuki caught her on the armor belt, dealing minimal damage. Regardless, Borgia was ordered to make for Goa for repair, and was replaced by Giulio Cesare. Her most famous engagement was during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where she, along with Italy's most up to date warships fought alongside the US Navy against the Kido Butai. She engaged Nagato early in the battle, and the two battleships traded salvoes for over an hour. Eventually, Borgia was struck by two 18 inch shells from Musashi, and she dropped behind the much larger battleship Italia, who then engaged Musashi. Borgia would be recalled to home waters along with most of Italy's battleships when the German invasion began. Her high powered guns and modern radar and rangefinders allowed her to target German positions with ease, and she quickly became a prime target in the eyes of the Luftwaffe. She was targeted a total of 41 times by German aircraft, taking no significant damage from attacks. She ended the war as one of Italy's most decorated battleships, and would be put into reserve until 1998, when she was turned into a museum ship.
