The Caio Mario class of flotilla leaders, named for the famed Roman general and statesman Gaius Marius, was designed in 1932 as a destroyer leader. She was launched in 1936, after an extremely secretive construction program. Commissioned along with 4 sisters in 1937, her and her sisters were used to lead fleets of destroyers. Due to this, the French, German and Soviet navies classified them as large destroyers. Caio Mario played a crucial role in the early Pacific War, escorting the Italian battlefleet in a time when the Regia Aeronautica did not have aerial superiority nor enough aircraft carriers. Caio Mario's class of ships laid the blueprint for the future Italian AA cruiser lineage. While she had a star studded career in the early war, she met her fate in 1943, when she was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese aircraft off Burma in an isolated night attack. The torpedo attack was conducted on her and her fleet of three Ventata class destroyers, and 7 Cavalieri class destroyers. The destroyer Fulmine swerved into a hard left to avoid the torpedoes dropped off her starboard bow, and the torpedoes meant for her struck Mario. She was hit three times, and split in half as her keel broke. She sank in a "V", ablaze from oil fires within 4 minutes. The destroyers threw nets overboard, ready to attempt to treat hundreds. Instead, only 5 badly burned, oil slicked survivors were pulled from the water.
