WWII 1944 Terrain - D-Day, Normandy

Pointe du Hoc
Pointe du Hoc is a prominent cliff between Utah and Omaha Beaches on the Normandy coast, standing 100 feet above the English Channel. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, it was the site of a daring assault by the U.S. 2nd Ranger Battalion. Their mission was to scale the cliffs under fire and destroy a battery of German 155mm guns believed to threaten the Allied landings. Upon reaching the top, the Rangers found the guns had been moved inland but quickly located and disabled them.

In the days that followed, the Rangers faced fierce German counterattacks from the nearby towns of Cricqueville-en-Bessin, Saint-Pierre-du-Mont, and La Cambe. Isolated and low on ammunition, they held their position until reinforcements arrived. Clearing operations by the 5th Ranger Battalion, elements of the 29th Infantry Division, and 8th Infantry Regiment focused on securing these surrounding areas, which were critical for establishing the link between Utah and Omaha Beaches. The success at Pointe du Hoc played a key role in the broader success of Operation Overlord.

Points of Interest:

Pointe du Hoc:
A steep cliff overlooking the English Channel between Utah and Omaha Beaches, Pointe du Hoc was stormed by the U.S. 2nd Ranger Battalion on D-Day to neutralize a German gun battery threatening the Allied landings.

Saint-Pierre-du-Mont:
Located just inland from Pointe du Hoc, this village served as a key objective for the U.S. 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions during the D-Day landings, offering a strategic position for advancing toward Grandcamp and cutting off German reinforcements.

Cricqueville-en-Bessin:
German infantry and support units held defensive positions in and around the village, often using it as a staging area for counterattacks and reinforcement routes.

La Montagne:
This elevated area hosted observation posts, machine-gun nests, and fallback positions used by troops of the 352nd Infantry Division. Its height allowed German forces to monitor coastal movements and direct artillery fire inland.
