Lore

With the advent of the new Finality class heavy cruiser and its system-wide power projection capabilities, Mars recognized the capability for each of the cruisers to carry a small fighter wing. Eager to capitalize on this opportunity, MFS began rapidly developing a pair of small spaceborne craft, with one to act as a space superiority fighter, and one to act as an anti-capital ship bomber. For the former role, the Ceres was conceived to be as small as possible, while still retaining lethal firepower against other carrier borne craft. When the first design, the Ceres I, had subpar performance, Mars told MFS to go back to the drawing board and perform a complete redesign. When MFS came back, they had one of the most capable fighters in the system.

Covered with a paper thin layer of light armor and with numerous exposed systems, many initially doubted that the Ceres would ever be capable in combat. However, when the Ceres finally saw combat with contemporary designs from RFI, it achieved an astonishing kill ratio, and for one reason only:

Earth's ships could barely even maintain a lock on it.

The light armor and exposed systems had been traded in exchange for incredible speed, allowing the Ceres to have unprecedented maneuverability. The light weight combined with the sheer number of thrusters enabled the Ceres to perform maneuvers so extreme that many RFI ships simply couldn't stay locked on to it in close combat, allowing it to easily evade almost all incoming fire, while its devastating armament meant that it didn't have to linger in a combat zone for long to destroy enemy fighters and bombers.

Today, the Ceres is a staple of the Finality's fighter complement, covering for Vesta class bombers and Phoenix class dropships in combat engagements, and serving as a tremendous force multiplier for the Finality in operations against enemy carriers.

Description

Boasting 6 gatling guns, a rocket launcher, and an extremely large number of thrusters for a ship of its size, the Ceres is able to survive enemy fire with ease through evasion, while simultaneously being able to engage and destroy enemy small craft with minimal effort. Its small size allows for many to be carried on dedicated carriers, or even other warships with secondary hangars.

The primary weakness of the Ceres is the amount of hydrogen fuel required to supply the small craft's numerous engines. Due to this, the majority of the internal space is devoted solely to fuel storage, further emphasizing the need for evasive flying to avoid a hit causing a catastrophic hydrogen cookoff. Even still, the fuel is limited when conducting full combat operations, although the Ceres is meant for hit and run attacks rather than lingering in one area for an extended period of time, so the Ceres is still able to conduct a handful of intercepts before returning for refueling, rearming, and repair.

For the sake of convenience for ground crews, the Ceres is equipped with directional visibility lights for ease of awareness, and a self repair projector to allow for easy and quick repairs while on a carrier engaged in combat. Additionally, each of its gatling guns is connected to the internal conveyor network, relegating the only need for manual reloading to the forward mounted rocket launcher, although even this isn't commonly done due to the rocket launcher's limited use in small craft combat. This puts the Ceres in contrast to the Vesta as a quickly rearmed and repaired interceptor that can land and return to combat in under 30 seconds, whereas the Vesta is a specialized heavy hitter for attacking capital ships directly.
