Lore

With the advent of the new Finality class heavy cruiser and its system-wide power projection capabilities, Mars recognized the capability for each of the cruisers to carry a small fighter wing. Eager to capitalize on this opportunity, MFS began rapidly developing a pair of small spaceborne craft, with one to act as a space superiority fighter, and one to act as an anti-capital ship bomber. For the latter role, the Vesta was conceived to be a survivable and heavy hitting platform from which any ship with a hangar could launch devastating attacks on enemy capital ships.

When MFS came back to the Martian federal government, they quickly signed off on the production of the small bomber. Not very long after, war with Earth broke out, and the Vesta proved itself as a powerful anti capital ship weapon. Able to rely on the capable Ceres fighters to intercept any incoming enemy fighters, the Vesta's only worry was enemy point defense, against which it was able to reliably resist with its reinforced cockpit and partially concealed thrusters, shielded from enemy fire.

During the war, crews from both sides spoke of the Vesta splitting enemy capital ships in two, after slicing the hull in half with its massive rocket launcher armament. Since then, the Vesta has had a place on almost all Martian cruisers and carriers, still feared by Mars's enemies across the system.

Description

As a craft built around survivability first and foremost, the Vesta features a reinforced cockpit with heavy armor partially covering it, as well as having most of its engines concealed within the hull of the ship, providing shielding from direct enemy fire. Due to the desire for higher maneuverability under Martian small craft doctrine, the reinforced armor only covers a small part of the ship, as extending it across more of its surface area was seen as too costly on the stringent weight requirements for the bomber. As such, the Vesta predominantly keeps its nose pointed at the enemy as much as possible during an engagement, as it is in this orientation where the heavy armor offers the greatest protection.

6 rocket launchers linked to a salvo script give the Vesta devastating power against enemy capital ships, however 2 gatling guns also provide a somewhat reliable self defense measure against enemy fighters that manage to slip past the Vesta's escorts. Despite not being as maneuverable as the Ceres, the Vesta is still one of the more maneuverable craft in the system, partially relying on evasion for its survivability.

Much like the Ceres, the Vesta boasts both a visibility light system for guidance in carrier operations, as well as a repair projector to make quick repairs easier while on board a carrier in combat. However, unlike the Ceres, the Vesta lacks a self reload system, and as such its rocket launchers require manual reloading by carrier crews, although its gatling guns are automatically fed by the internal conveyor network.
