As part of the expansion of the cross-border suburban railway TiLo (Treni Regionali Ticino Lombardia), a dual-system variant was required that could run on both 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC (Switzerland) and 3 kV DC (Italy). Stadler developed the RABe 524, also known as the ETR 150/524 in Italy. Designed for higher capacities in the dense regular-interval traffic around Lugano, Bellinzona, Chiasso, Varese, Como, Milan in Lombardy and Ticino. TiLo is a joint venture between SBB and Trenord. The RABe 524.3 is a key element in modern, international regional transport in the Alpine region. It helps to improve accessibility between Switzerland and northern Italy and complements the S-Bahn service in Ticino.
