描述
The Italian scout cruiser Aquila was originally laid down in 1913 as the destroyer Vifor for the Royal Romanian Navy. However, with the outbreak of World War I, Italy requisitioned the vessel in 1915 while she was still under construction. Reclassified as a scout cruiser (esploratore), she was launched in 1916 and commissioned into the Regia Marina in 1917. During World War I, Aquila served in the Adriatic Sea, participating in operations against the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Notably, on 15 May 1917, she took part in a battle alongside other Italian and British vessels against Austro-Hungarian forces, during which she was hit and immobilized by enemy fire. Later in the war, she supported bombardment operations, including the attack on Durazzo. In the interwar period, Aquila continued to serve in the Italian Navy. In 1928, she was involved in rescue operations for the sunken Italian submarine F 14 in the Adriatic Sea. Eventually, in 1939, she was transferred to the Spanish Nationalist Navy, where she was renamed Melilla and served until she was stricken in 1950. The Aquila's design featured a length of 94.7 meters, a beam of 9.5 meters, and a draught of 3.6 meters. She displaced 1,432 tons at standard load and 1,751 tons at full load. Her propulsion system allowed for a maximum speed of 34 knots, and she was armed with a combination of guns and torpedo tubes suitable for her role as a scout cruiser.
