描述
Libeccio was designed pre-Coup of Reform in 1929 as a sloop to both garrison the colonies, and escort convoys. After the end of the Coup, Caroni took special interest in the project, and ordered twenty to be built in 1932. This order increased to 40 in 1934, and then maxxed out at 47 in 1936. The vessels were stationed in Libya, the Horn of Africa, Goa, and the Yangtze and Hai rivers in China to protect interests. These vessels had uneventful careers despite one being sunk by the IJAF in 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Italy demanded reparations, which Japan obliged, due to both nations having good relations at the time. During the war, Libeccio herself was sent to Goa, and assisted convoys in the early stages of the war. Libeccio sank in drydock in 1942 after a Japanese bombing campaign over Rangoon. Once Japan captured the city and port, Libeccio was raised, and towed to Kyushu, where she was repaired and refitted in Kure. Her boilers, AA weaponry, and main guns were gutted, and replaced with Japanese ones, being renamed "PB-202". She patrolled the waters off the Home Islands until 1943, where she would be sent to Truk. Later in the early hours of December 4th, 1944, she was outside of Truk during Operazione Ombra Silenziosa. She was picked up on the radar of Combattere class destroyer Alcione, who then opened fire, striking her twice. PB-202's searchlights snapped on, and suddenly all 7 of the destroyers opened fire on PB-202. Her bow Type 88 76mm heavy AA gun exploded after a short engagement, and the destroyer Centurione torpedoed and sank her. Her wreck still sits off Truk.
