Bellicose - Crimean War Russians

This is a quote made by fellow Russians when describing the average Russian soldier, who at this time experienced intense hardship. Those who were serving oftentimes would never see their homes or families again. Drill was heavily encouraged for the soldiers - the Marquis de Cuistin stating that they are excellently disciplined with parade-ground precision, but that "their unhealthy grey complexion speaks of hunger and destitution, and all this because the commissaries rob the poor men shamelessly." The discipline was so severe that troops were oftentimes even afraid of using their entrenching tools, as according to Cpt. Hodasevich he wrote that entrenching tools were "kept for show, but not for use." There are stories of hundreds of guns in a regiment considered defective, or a story involving the powder for their cartridges being replaced with sand. After all, the percussion muskets (whether conversion or new-production, such as the 1845 pattern) were quite rare to be had and many Russian infantrymen still utilized outdated firelock systems against a force armed with percussion rifle-muskets. Other branches of the Russian military were superior to their foes, notably their cavalry and artillery - but for the average infantryman, life was cruel and bleak.

Crimean Russian - Kasket

• This Russian soldier is sporting the 1844 Kasket, an iconic spiked helmet. There is a big of discussion as to whether the design came from Russia or Prussia. The story I have read involves Tsar Nicholas I creating the design, and upon a visitation by Prince Charles of Prussia, he was impressed so much he decided to implement it within Prussian ranks. I believe this story dates to 1842 or prior. The insignia he sports features the number '14' which represents the 14th Division, commanded by Lt. General Moller, specifically the 27th 'Volhynia' and 28th 'Minski' Infantry Regiments. He sports a percussion cap pouch, cartridge box, bayonet, and sword hanger in both black and white leather. Alongside that, he dons the 1830-pattern boots, white summer trousers, and the commonplace greatcoats worn by Russian troops at this time - typically to protect their uniforms.

Crimean Russian - Forage

• This soldier is more generic than the previous, not having a specified unit. He is wearing a simple forage cap that most Russian soldiers wore during the conflict as it was more comfortable than their kaskets. His leather is all black and also sports the dark green winter trousers - alongside this he has very sporting Victorian facial hair to keep him warm. In all other aspects he is identical to his counterpart.
