描述
Centurione was the last design of the Standardized Destroyer project, designated "Batch C". She featured improved AA, a single quadruple torpedo launcher, and four 135mm double gun turrets. She also featured increased armor from 100mm to 140mm, along with increased armor of her bow and stern to 50mm. Centurione was laid down in December 1942, and was launched in July of 1943. Centurione would serve with the Red Sea Flotilla for the first 3 months of her career, before being sent to Asia to replace older destroyers. In December, she sortied with three of her sisters from Batch C, and two from Batches A and B. The group of destroyers sailed under the cover of night to Surabaya without their naval ensigns. The destroyers slipped into the base at around 2 AM, and after a minute of silence, flooded the naval base with torpedoes and gunfire. They sank two Japanese destroyers, a fleet oiler, and critically damaged Japanese light cruisers Yura and Tatsuma, who were moored off to the right of the piers. The destroyers then fled back to Goa. The operation, known in Italy as "Operazione Ombra Silenziosa", was met with celebration in Rome. Centurione would serve with first the Italian East African Navy after the war, then after the collapse of Italian East Africa, she was sold to Indonesia in 1956.
