描述
Giovanni da Verrazzano was the third sister ship of the Giunio Bruto class. During her construction, she was ordered to be built with a different flight deck length, an island, and better anti aircraft abilities. The change was reflected, and as a result, her construction was delayed by four months. Finally being launched in October of 1939, she would be quickly moored in Palermo for a fleet review, where Caroni smiled upon seeing her, stating "This one I like. Build three just like her". Verrazzano saw little action before Italian entry into World War II, however she did run aground off the coast of Eritrea on a training exercise in 1941. After a month of sitting idle, she was finally removed from the rocks, and was laid up in drydock for 8 months. In 1942, she had her first true deployment after arriving in Goa, where she bombed and sank Japanese light cruiser Abukuma during a naval battle off the coast of Australia. Verrazzano would eventually return to Italy in 1945, where her carrier planes proved vital in bombing German installations along the Julian Line. Verrazzano would end up in drydock until the end of the war due to having been hit twice with Fritz X guided bombs during a night raid on Cagliari, Sardinia. She sank on an even keel, and by war's end, was raised and repaired. She served in the Italian Navy until 1953 in active duty, and until 1961 in reserve. She was scrapped in 1963, and her bell is on dispplay in Palermo.
