描述
Re Umberto was laid down in 1934 as a "Standarized Battleship". Caroni always imagined a standardized battleship template that could be built with ease, and Umberto was one of these designs. Originally 12 were ordered, but only 3 were finished by 1942. Re Umberto was first deployed to Eritrea in 1938, and remained there until the Bombing of Singapore. After the sinking of Giuseppe Mazzini was confirmed, Umberto was sent to Asia with the task of escorting super battleship Ottavio Caroni. She was transferred from her first fleet under Giuseppe Brunti, and transferred into the Italian Asiatic Fleet under Enzo Carafa upon arrival. She would serve as one of super battleship Ottavio Caroni's escorts until 1943, where she would throw a propeller blade during a shore bombardment of Siam. Upon returning to service, she would be attacked by Japanese air forces from Borneo. She shot down two out of the six P1Y1's that attacked her, however the remaining aircraft dropped their munitions, and scored a single hit, The bomb exploded, collapsing her funnel and rear mast, and causing a flash fire of her 90mm port side heavy anti aircraft weaponry. Umberto briefly lost all electrical power for over an hour before she was finally able to steam to safety in Goa. She would remain there until 1945, where she deployed one last time to Okinawa, bombarding the shores for over 3 hours and firing over 450+ shells. She was transferred to the Italian East Africa Navy in 1948, being renamed to "AOIN Addis Abeba". She was scrapped in 1963.
