The expression "mad as a hatter" comes from 19th century hatmakers, who brushed the felt with a mercury mixture to stiffen the hairs and make it easier to form into its desired shape. Exposure to the mercury vapours caused heavy metal poisoning, symptoms of which include irritability, muscle tremors, and memory lapses.
