描述
The Ottavio Caroni class battleship was designed all the way in 1937 as a rival to the Japanese Yamato designs. The lead ship, Ottavio Caroni, rolled off the slipway on October 7th, 1941 and was commissioned on Caroni's birthday, December 20th. She would be sent to Asia in January of 1942, making it to Goa on January 17th. She would be dispatched for her first operation during the Battle of Guadalcanal, where she engaged Japanese battleships Hiei and Kirishima, along with destroyers Inazuma and Ikazuchi. Ottavio fired a total of 36 shells during the battle, striking Hiei twice, Kirishima three times, and blowing up Ikazuchi. Her gunnery wasn't very accurate thanks to her dated rangefinders. She would receive a refit in 1943, updating her rangefinders and fitting her with radar. Her most famous exercise during the war was her dual with battleship Yamato during the Battle Off Samar. After Yamato fired upon USS White Plains, Caroni fired back at her approximately 48 seconds later, striking the behemoth twice. The two ships dueled for a total of one hour and twenty six minutes, where the results were inconclusive. However, Caroni fired a full broadside with her twelve eighteen inch guns, and struck Yamato's funnel, and her pagoda mast, killing 31 people aboard her, and making her drop to half speed. After this duel with Yamato, Caroni was diverted back to Goa, where on the way, she was struck by two five hundred pound bombs from Japanese bombers, who took off from Singapore after being made aware of the leviathan's departure from Samar. Her starboard 8 inch mount on her stern was blown clean overboard, and she lost control of her rudder. 64 people were killed, but Caroni made it to Goa 9 days behind schedule. She would not deploy again before the war ended.
