The General Ferrati Class was designed in 1913 as the first true battlecruisers of the Italian Regia Marina. General Ferrati herself was completed in 1916, and she would be pressed into service in the Adriatic Sea. She, her sisters, and the battleships Caio Duillio, Andrea Doria, Dante Alighieri, Giulio Cesare and Conte di Cavour engaged the Austro-Hungarian fleet in the Battle of Fiume, which proved disastrous for Austria-Hungary. In 1917, Ferrati was diverted to the Italian Dodecanese, and remained there until the end of the war. Ferrati returned to Sardinia in 1921, but was redeployed against Greece during the Corfu Incident. Ferrati would sail to port in Palermo, and remained there in reserve. In 1928, she had her 120mm secondary casemates removed, and was given a modest anti aircraft complement. By 1931, Ferrati was poorly maintained, listing to port 4 degrees, and could only make 17 knots by the time of the Coup of Reform. Alfonso Carafa, a Caronist sailor aboard her, launched a mutiny on February 8th, 1931. The mutiny lasted four hours, and captain Enzo de Luca was thrown overboard. Carafa ordered Ferrati's 9 305mm guns to train on the port she was moored in. The guns fired twice, causing a large fire that quickly engulfed the buildings around her. Ferrati, despite her poor condition, slipped her moorings, and sailed out of the harbor that night. She arrived in Genova, the designated capitol of Caroni's forces a day later, met with celebration.
