RN Goffredo Mameli

Goffredo Mameli was designed during Project Marina as a heavy cruiser that would comply with the Washington Naval Treaty. She was approved for construction in 1932, and was finished in 1934. Mameli had an uneventful career in the leadup to World War Two, but during the war, she wreaked havoc on Japanese convoys. In 1944, she was attacked by Japanese bombers from an airfield off Borneo, and was hit twice with two 500 pound bombs. The first detonated at the stern of the ship, and the second hit the bridge, killing Captain Vincenzo Fiore, and destroying the supports of her tower, which made the tower collapse, killing 600+ sailors. She limped to a harbor in Singapore, where she sat for the remainder of the war. She would be towed back to Italy in 1946, and broken up in Sicily.
