Unlanded Inheritance

Ever wonder what happens to all that gold of your courtiers when they die?
Don't you just hate seeing all that gold go to waste?


Any landless character, when they die, would have all their assets seized by another dimension, never to be seen again. It doesn't matter if they have any heirs or not, or if they were previously a duke that's temporarily down on their luck. Everything got wiped away.

Any unlanded character with at least 35g will, on death, give their gold split evenly among their children.
* If there are no living children, it will be split evenly among other family members (siblings, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts & uncles, nieces & nephews).
* If no family members, then 85% will go to their spouse.
* If no spouse, then a large portion will be lost to the vultures of the world, but the remaining gold will be split unevenly among the local priest, the host & liege, and the head of faith - depending who exists. (Most common example: the local priest gets 20%, liege gets 28.8%, and the head of faith gets 5.12%, with 46% eliminated.)

Compatible with everything. (Yes, including Bum to God.) This mod overwrites nothing. It will also confidently work with future game versions without needing an update - but I'll push dummy updates to keep it current in the launcher.

Save game compatible. Can be both added and removed from a save without problems.



Commentary on Balance and Design
Unlanded characters can amass pretty hefty sums of gold in this game by default. Some are spawned with as much as 300 gold. They can have income from councilor jobs or a passive +0.5g/month. They could be rulers that are dethroned - which commonly happens for priests.

Paradox balanced the game economy with that gold being wiped. This is cumulatively a very large amount of gold we're talking about here - and the economy wasn't meant to have all of it! If it was all fed back to rulers (the only characters that can actually spend gold) then there would be faster development globally and it would change the pace of the ages. It would also widen the wealth divide between population-dense and population-sparse zones (as the dense zones would have more opportunities to spawn characters with money, and dethrone characters).
I wanted to respect these considerations, while still also achieving a sense of inheritance. That meant looking for ways to bleed off the money.

The first is to not consider paltry sums. Anything less than 35g is discarded.
The next is to split it first among multiple children. 100g split among three children is 33g each. They each got it, but *their* future kids won't unless they figure out a way to earn more cash on their own.
Same with dividing among family members.
Wives shouldn't be left penniless, and I wanted an intermediary between you the player and your heirless courtier. But succession in CK3 is focused on offspring. Seems like a good place to cut some fat.
After the spouse, we aren't even in family territory anymore. A large pile of gold shouldn't just *disappear* -- and in CK2 it didn't, either. But giving it all to the liege is just way too much. History is full of commoners showing more loyalty to their church and faith. Plus, some one has to pay for the funeral!

This is a fork, with permission, of Karstaag's Unlanded Characters Inherit Gold mod. And I'm very grateful I had his mod to work from - it saved me who knows how much time making this.

For all the CK2 fans that fondly remember "old mining", this mod is also made for you. It just makes you work for it a little more. (Spoiler text to hide a mild exploit. RP players stay away.) Instead of "Old Mining", you can play the new minigame of marrying your random courtiers to Rich Single Bachelors In Your Area. Preferably the ones in poor health. A sturdy, healthy woman of 45 can amass over 1000g through multiple marriages this way before her death of old age. Now, you'd only get some ~30% of that... unless you arrest the poor sod. What is 5 tyranny and 20 Legitimacy but the means to an end? Gold is where real power lies! Gold! GOLD! MUAHAHAHAHA
