Gauntlet Ace
The Gauntlet is a new challenge added to Star of Providence, and is found on Floor 4 and Floor 5. It is found in shortcut rooms, the ones opened by bombing cracked walls.

In the screenshot below, the Gauntlet was found on Floor 5. The left blank square is a normal shortcut. The diamond-shaped room is the Entrance to the Gauntlet (note: please ignore the skulls on this map, it means the rooms next to the gauntlet still feature unfought enemies).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Gauntlet can be entered by talking to the Gauntlet Caretaker in the diamond-shaped shortcut room. This is what the Gauntlet Caretaker looks like:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Talking to the Caretaker teleports you into the closed-off Gauntlet section. You cannot teleport out of the Gauntlet unless you complete it first. The Gauntlet always features 5 rooms with timed minigames.

The minigames are randomized, and consist of the following types:

  • Clearing enemies
  • Tagging an enemy with a flag in hand
  • Avoiding attacks
  • Shooting blocks or walls
  • Bosses

You can either fail or perfect these minigame rooms.

To perfect a minigame you must:
1) Clear the objective of the minigame, and 2) Clear it within the time limit.

Failing a minigame is done by:
1) Losing 1 HP (shields do not count!), or 2) failing to reach the objective before the timer hits 0.

The objective counter and timer can be found at the top of the screen, like the screenshot below:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

How do I know if I've failed or perfected the minigame?

Failing a minigame immediately stops the minigame and shows a big red X at the top of the screen.

Perfecting a minigame shows clapping hands with 1 of 3 types of text:

  • Perfect!
  • Bravo!
  • Excellent!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The final room in the Gauntlet is always the hardest. It often features a Gauntlet-specific bossfight that isn't found anywhere else in the game.

After fighting this bossfight, the Gauntlet Caretaker will give you the rewards for taking on the Gauntlet. Perfecting more minigames means more rewards.

It is imperative for the achievement "Gauntlet Ace" to talk to the Gauntlet Caretaker after completing the Gauntlet until his dialogue is completely exhausted.

After completing the Gauntlet a handful of times and exhausting the Caretaker's dialogue as much as possible, the Caretaker will ask you what you fight for. Answering this question should make it possible to encounter the Caretaker himself as the final fight in the Gauntlet!

Now, it could very well be that it still takes a while for the Gauntlet Caretaker to show up. I recommend searching for the Gauntlet on Floor 4 and 5 every time you do a run, and getting good at every type of minigame until you encounter the Caretaker.

The fight with the Caretaker has multiple phases. Only the first phase of this fight (his first healthbar) must be completed without taking damage and within the time limit. Doing so unlocks multiple extra phases as long as you have perfected each minigame before it.

!The additional phases of the Caretaker boss fight do not have to be perfect and will continue even if you take damage.!

------------------------------------------------------------------

To get the "Gauntlet Ace" achievement, one must thus:
  • 1) Exhaust the dialogue of the Caretaker after each Gaunlet as much as possible
  • 2) Get a perfect on the 4 minigames before the final room
  • 3) Get a perfect on the the first phase of the Gauntlet Caretaker bossfight, if he shows up
  • 4) Defeat the Gauntlet Caretaker's additional phases normally

Jack of All Trades
The newest added ship, the Armsmaster, can only be unlocked by fighting a specific boss in the new Gauntlet challenge. For more information on the Gauntlet, see the section above.

The boss looks like a big blue/purple ship and somewhat resembles the Armsmaster ship.
Finding this boss is pure luck, but visiting the Gauntlet every run should guarantee it showing up.

Getting hit by the boss means you fail the room and immediately stops the bossfight. So, you must defeat it without getting hit in order to unlock the Armsmaster ship.

Beating any regular run with the Armsmaster awards the player with "Jack of All Trades".

Eternal Nightmare and Decoherence
Looping was already a mechanic within Star of Providence. However, the amount of Loops has been reduced from 50 to a maximum of 13.

This means that the difficulty of Loops ramp up more quickly, but you don't have to spend as much time on them.

Reaching Loop 13 (the final Loop) on any difficulty awards the player with "Eternal Nightmare", just like Loop 50 did before the update.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Loop 13 now features a completely new and incredibly difficult final phase of the Database bossfight. This phase has no official name, so I'll call it XXXXX for now.

For this boss, I recommend practicing Looping on hard mode a lot, as well as to make sure to gain a high health count before entering Floor 5 and 6.

Beating XXXXX at the end of Loop 13 brings the player to an empty world, where the credits start playing after entering and exiting empty rooms. Once the credits are done, the victory screen pops up and the player is awarded with "Decoherence".

Trials (Overview and Unlock)
The newest update also features new challenges called Trials.

Trials can be accessed through the purchasable "Mirror" in Kleines' shop in the main hub.

However, Trials themselves must also be bought in Kleines' shop. Prices for each Trial purchase go up significantly, so I recommend saving up scrap to buy these if you've purchased every other useful upgrade in the shop.

Once the Trial is bought, it can be found in the Mirror under the "Trials" section.
Every Trial features a handful of bosses fought during runs, and can only truly be unlocked in the mirror once those bosses have been defeated. The locks on the Trial in the Mirror show whether the boss has been defeated (lock is open) or if it has not (lock is closed).

In the end, unlocking every single Trial requires the player to defeat most (mini)bosses on Hard difficulty, including some of the hardest bosses found in Star of Providence (such as Chaos God, Database (without XXXXX) and Monolith). I highly recommend getting comfortable on hard mode in general when tackling Trials.
The bosses that cannot be defeated in Hard mode, but only on Normal mode are:

  • Special Offer
  • Renegade
  • Thirteenth
  • The Machine
Trial I
Trial I features the following (mini)bosses:

1) Chomper (normal mode) *miniboss*
2) Forgotten Ringleader (normal mode)
3) Behemoth (normal mode)
4) Ordinator (normal mode)
5) Armor Tac (normal mode)
6) Overlord (normal mode)

This is a fairly easy trial. However, Overlord has an extra phase that can only be fought in Trial I. This means you can only practice it by fighting Trial I on repeat.

Beating Trial I awards the player with "Epitaph I".

Trial II
Trial II features the following (mini)bosses:

1) Chamberlord (normal mode)
2) Daemon (normal mode)
3) Bloke (normal mode)
4) Ice Wyrm (normal mode)
5) Firewall(normal mode)
6) Renegade (normal mode)
7) "Unknown"/Floor 6 boss on normal mode (normal mode)

Trial II also features some challenging recovery rooms. Instead of receiving damage and health upgrades for free, the rooms in between boss battles in Trial II contain laser hazards and enemies.

Beating Trial II awards the player with "Epitaph II".

Trial III and "Insult to Injury"
Trial III features the following (mini)bosses:

1) Thirteenth (normal mode)
2) Guardian (hard mode)
3) Prescence (hard mode) --> does not count if it shows up as curse or regular enemy
4) Devourer (hard mode)
5) Reactor (hard mode)
6) The Engorged (hard mode) *miniboss*
7) Monolith (hard mode)

Trial III is considerably harder than Trial I and II, mostly due to the appearance of hard mode bosses. In addition, the rooms in between boss fights feature puzzle mechanics in which you can be damaged. Later on in this guide, I linked a guide by Wooph on how to access Trial V. In this guide, the puzzle mechanics of Trial III are explained very well. I recommend reading it if you want to get the hang of them.

Beating Trial III awards the player with "Epitaph III".

--------------------------------------------------------------

At the start of Trial III, players can acquire the achievement "Insult to Injury" by hurting themselves in the starting room of the Trial until they are 1 HP. Entering the fight against Thirteen with 1 HP will make Thirteen refuse to fight you, which gives you the achievement.

Trial IV
Trial IV is special in that it features new bosses that were added in the Into Oblivion update. These bosses can only be found in Loop mode. You can start finding all of them from Loop 7 and on, both on normal and hard difficulties. For this Trial, though, the player is required to beat them on hard mode. These are some of the most difficult non-endgame bosses in the game due to their irregular attack patterns and unique mechanics.

Trial IV features the following (mini)bosses:

1) Ersatz (hard mode Loop)
2) Flauros (hard mode Loop)
3) Aletheia (hard mode Loop)
4) Lucid Dream (hard mode Loop) --> features 3 bosses in 1, but they are all somewhat weak
5) Interceptor (hard mode) *miniboss*
6) Database (hard mode, any Loop before Loop 13) --> no XXXXX after second major phase

The rooms in between boss fights are also very hazardous, especially if you want to pick up health and damage upgrades. The final room before Database requires the player to dodge increasingly frequent attacks in a tight space while the exit opens up slowly, so beware.

Beating Trial IV awards the player with "Epitaph IV".

Trial V
Trial V can be purchased and accessed in the Mirror just like the Trials before it, as long as their boss requirements are met. However, the player is also required to open a door in its first room with four secret keys that can be found in Trial I - IV.

Player Wooph on Steam made an amazing guide for aquiring each of the 4 keypieces. Check their guide out below and show them some love!

https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3433464626

After opening the door with the 4 keypieces, Trial V starts. It features the following bosses:

1) Grinder (hard mode)
2) Charlie (hard mode)
3) Fish (hard mode)
4) Nightmare, counterparts Genesis and Oblivion (hard mode)
5) Unnamed (no unlock requirements)
6) Chaosgod (hard mode)
7) The Arbitor --> only available in this trial

Trial V is by far the hardest challenge in the entire game. Even though it doesn't feature rooms in between bosses with hazards, and even though the player is given amazing health and damage upgrades, the bosses in this Trial are very difficult. I highly recommend practicing Chaosgod on hard mode in the Mirror until able to complete it hitless before taking on Trial V.

The Arbitor is an upgraded version of The Warden, but his attack patterns are completely different from its normal counterpart. It is a boss that can only be learned through practice. If you want a fair shot at practice, though, looking up a video on its attack patterns may help out facing unexpected moves. No boss really compares to The Arbitor, especially when hit with constricted movement attacks during his phase-transitions.

Beating Trial V awards the player with "Eulogy".

World Record
The achievement "World Record" is obtained by "listening" to every song in the game. The player does not have to have Music volume turned on in the settings to acquire this achievement. Having a complete jukebox in the main hub is the true requirement for World Record.

The song list of Star of Providence is very long, so it is not included in this guide. It is most important to fight every boss in the game, as well as visit every type of floor. Star of Providence also features multiple pause menu songs, so pausing on different floors, bosses, etc. is recommended as well.

Personally, the following two songs were the most difficult for me to find:

15) Super Temple --> plays on the Temple floors while playing on hard mode

75) Towering Blues (piano) --> a piano variation of the Floor 3 and Floor 4 pause menu music

Please let me know in the comments which songs were difficult to find for you, so I can add them to the list.
Thank you for reading!

for some reason, Trial IV just got unlocked in the shop for me after I beat lucid dream hard mode for the first time despite the fact I've never beaten database hard mode ever. I guess despite showing up as a little lock on the trials page it's just not an unlock condition at all? strange

@菈拉啦, Both songs can be found in the Gauntlet! It is the other achievement you do not own right now, so you should be able to unlock "World Record" while trying to obtain the other ;)

@Baba is OMNIPOTENT. Alright, thanks for the information! I will update it.

@MENTAL DESOLATION. Indeed, the new bosses in Loops can be found earlier. I will change it so that this guide states that you must be on Loop 7 to guarantee finding ALL of them.

And since I forgot to mention it before, boss 5 of trial 5 is exclusive to trial 5 (like Arbitor). It cannot be found anywhere else in the game so beating it is not required to unlock trial 5.
InfinityC 3 月 14 日 下午 8:20
I don't think the Caretaker has to be fought since I think I unlocked trial 5 before doing so. Also to answer your latest question. Eternal Nightmare (as well as its predecessors) are supposed to be unlocked by reaching the loop rather than beating it, but achievements were a bit buggy last time I checked so that could be why you might think that (for example I got peashooter and power internal just for achieving decoherence for some reason).
MENTAL DESOLATION 3 月 14 日 下午 7:37
this isn't a bug either -- i've fought Ersatz thrice now
MENTAL DESOLATION 3 月 14 日 下午 7:32
i was able to encounter Ersatz on Loop 1. it remains to be seen whether i'm able to encounter the rest -- Flauros might be available at Loop 2 and so on, but...
