In 2007 the State Railway of Thailand placed an order to Siemens for 9 sets of standard-gauge commuter trains for the then-under-construction Airport Rail Link. A decision was made to build the new trains on the tried and tested Siemens Desiro UK family, basing the new trains off the Class 360 Desiro. Among the small differences between the two classes of trains include: A massive air-conditioning unit housed in 'humps' on the roof of the train [not modelled]. The 9 trains are divided into 2 subclasses, 5 of the trains are 3-car 'City Line' commuter sets, and 4 4-car 'Express Line' express sets. City line trains feature only longitudinal seats, while express trains feature normal latitudinal seats, with one of the front carriages used purely for baggage. Eventually the SRTET, the operator of the line, faced a shortage of rolling stock, and ceased the operation of Express Line services, using the 4-car sets as part of the City Line as commuter trains instead. Trains were handed over to the new operator 'Era 1' in 2021-2022.
