This game doesn't really support modern hardware all that well, but it can be easily fixed by downloading a mod from Nexusmods.

All you have to do is to get the mod from this link[www.nexusmods.com] and then download it. You'll need to create an account in case you've never used this website before.

Once you've got the file, you'll need to extract it. I personally recommend 7-Zip[www.7-zip.org] as it is a free and open source tool, but you can use whatever software you prefer.

Now, open up the game's directory. Right click > Manage > Browse local files as shown in this screenshot below



It should open the game's root folder. Move the .zip file you downloaded from Nexus into this folder and then extract it. The end result should look like this.



And that's it. Now you should be able to play the game without any issues on modern hardware. Enjoy!
