The Douglas DC-8 is part of the first generation of jet airliners. First introduced in 1959, it was the second-most popular jet airliner at the time, being beat by Boeing's 707. Due to being a decade-old airframe, very few are still flying in cargo service.
As a part of Project Sunrise, a project to expand Sunset Airways service, the airline acquired two Douglas DC-8-72s from a boneyard in Mojave, California. These aircraft were once privately owned by Sunset Corporation executives, and previously flew for Delta Airlines. They were re-engined with CFM56 engines from an Airbus A320, and operate on special occasions.
