SS Belgenland

Here is the SS Belgenland, an ocean liner of the Belgian company Red Star Line!

She was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast. Her construction was halted by the outbreak of World War 1. When Germany invaded Belgium, Belgenland was hastily completed with her superstructure partially finished and transferred to the White Star Line. Now renamed "Belgic" in accordance to White Star's naming ships with "ic", she served the war as a cargo and later a troopship. After the war in 1922, she was refitted to her intended ocean liner role and given to her original owners, who restored her name. She continued service between Antwerp and New York, and proved to be a very popular ship. Although she was an ocean liner, Belgenland was a pioneer of the cruise ship concept, making annual voyages around the world. One of her most notable passengers, Albert Einstein, traveled with his wife on one her cruises. In 1993, the Einsteins boarded her once again, this time to flee Germany after the Nazis took control, where he vowed to never return to Germany. In 1935, Belgenland was transferred to the Atlantic Transport Line, renamed "Columbia", and was used for Caribbean cruises. Later that year, was laid up and sold for scrap. Belgenland was the largest liner owned by Red Star Line, and was the largest ship at the time to sail around the globe.
