Interesting facts about Jimmy Carter:

*Jimmy Carter is arguably the best example of a US president being more renowned for what he did outside of office rather than what he did while in office: Campaigning as an outsider who could restore decency and normality after the chaos of Vietnam and the Watergate scandal, Carter's administration focused on better energy efficiency, protection of nature, and, most importantly, human rights. Unfortunately, Carter's administration was unable to lower out-of-control inflation, high interest rates, and high gas prices, and was humiliated by a disastrous hostage situation in Iran which saw 54 US citizens kidnapped for over a year (and were only released the day Carter left office). All of this led the public to believe that Carter was a weak and ineffective president, and he lost the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan.

However, Carter's administration did have some noticeable successes: He created the Department of Education and the Department of Energy; expanded the amount of federally protected lands by over 103 million acres, and managed to enact the Camp David Peace Accords, which established a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt that, astonishingly, remains in effect to this day. Furthermore, the United States was not directly involved in any overseas conflicts during his term, something that has become depressingly rare in our day and age.

*Carter's greatest accomplishments in life were achieved after he left the White House: There are too many to list them all (you can get a good overview here[en.wikipedia.org]), but he earned a reputation as a champion of human rights after he he helped build over 4,300 homes for Habitat for Humanity, constantly traveled throughout the world as a goodwill ambassador to try and resolve humanitarian disasters, working to eradicate Guinea-worm disease (which, God-willing, will probably happen sometime in the 2030's), and even taught Sunday school well into his 90's, posing for pictures with guests after his lessons were completed.

*In response to the gas crisis of the 1970's, Carter was the first president to install solar panels on the roof of the White House. Ronald Reagan had them taken down.

*Carter was the longest-lived US president, being the first to make it to 100 before passing away on December 29th, 2024. Despite his age, he was still legally eligible to be re-elected as President, which happened in a parallel universe somewhere. Harry Turtledove will probably write a novel about that someday.

*Carter was the first president to be attacked by a rabbit while in office[en.wikipedia.org]; as 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' was still fresh in everyone's minds at the time, this caused no end of jokes at Carter's expense, even over 40 years later.[theonion.com]

*Carter was the first radioactive US president. No, really[www.cbc.ca].

*Carter has a Seawolf-class nuclear submarine named after him. According to this report, he not only got to stay on it overnight while at sea, but even got to briefly drive it[www.twz.com]. At the age of 87. Awesome.
