Hotel arrivals in Switzerland: POI layer and demand curve

描述
This mod includes a POI layer and a demand curve showing the number of people arriving at Swiss hotels. The data is based on the official figures of the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) for the year 2023. This applies to the location of the POIs, the demand of the POIs and the distance distribution of the demand curve.

In total, the POI layer contains around 450 POIs with hotel demand throughout Switzerland.

The demand curve and the POI layer are intended to represent guests who start or end their vacation and thus generate tourist traffic. They are not intended for day trips to mountains, historic city centers, museums, etc.; separate POIs should be created for these individual destinations with relatively local demand.

Questions and answers about the model

Why is a POI layer for hotel arrivals in Switzerland useful?
Switzerland is a country that is heavily influenced by tourism, and this also has an impact on traffic. Many small mountain villages with a small population attract many tourists who stay overnight. These are either classic ski resorts or simply beautifully situated. But a layer with tourist flows also makes sense for Swiss cities, since tourists often travel significantly further than other travelers.

Why does the demand distribution by distance look so strange?
For each country of origin, a normal distribution of distances to the hotel was assumed based on the statistics. Since a relatively large number of people come from Switzerland itself or from neighboring countries, trips between 100 and 300 km are most common, but there is also an accumulation between 500 and 800 km. At 500 km, Nimby switches from a 20-km grid to a 100-km grid, which results in an apparent peak for the 500-600 km distance range.

Does the demand curve also apply to hotels in other countries
Of course not 1:1, since every tourist destination has a slightly different distribution of travelers and the distances between the individual countries also vary, but in principle the demand curve should be appropriate for towns in Western and Central Europe.

Is every hotel in Switzerland individually mapped?
No, the BFS compiles statistics by municipality, which served as a basis and the respective POI was set as a hotel location as much as possible. In large municipalities, several areas were created as needed and the demand for the number of hotels was divided approximately proportionally. Accordingly, individual mountain hotels, etc. are usually not shown.

Are all hotel arrivals covered?
Not quite. There are places with hotels that do not report enough overnight stays or arrivals each year to be recorded by the BFS. No POIs were created in these places (<1 arrival/day).

Are all countries of origin covered?
The demand curve covers all countries of origin that are reported separately by the FSO. It does not include destinations that the FSO summarizes due to low demand.

Why are POIs sometimes so unevenly distributed?
This is due to the political municipal boundaries, according to which the BFS maintains the statistics. In some cases, hotels are very close to each other geographically, but are located in different municipalities, which is why two POIs were created.

Why are some POI names strange or do not match the village in which they are located?
Where known and meaningful, the place name was used instead of the municipality name to name the POI, but in principle the municipality was used for naming according to the BFS.

How many passengers are generated?
In principle, the demand per POI was set to correspond approximately to the average daily hotel arrivals. However, since the demand curve shows high demand values for distances up to 12,000 km, the full number of passengers to the hotels in NIMBY can only be reached if a very large network (intercontinental) is available.

Can the demand curve be used without the POI layer?
Yes, simply activate Mod and deactivate the POI layer in the options under “Change POI layer options”.

Something seems strange or isn't working as desired?
Creating the mod involved a lot of data work, so it's quite possible that one or two errors have crept in. If something doesn't seem right, it would be nice if you could let me know so that I can fix it.

I would, and have abided by original photographers licenses and wishes before. If they asked me to pay them for use of a picture, I would either pay them, or apologise and cease its use. I would abide by how they want their art to be used, I'd actually listen to them. You can't claim to know what every photographer or illustrator in the entire world wants to do with their art. In your example how much of the photo is making its way into a new artwork, because that could change everything to the extent that local laws might completely protect you or them.

Would you like to guess who took the photo in my Melboune POIs thumbnail? The hint lies in my SD card. I admit that I overlooked crediting the logo to City of Melbourne, but if you attack me for that then you'll really show how little ammunition you have. You don't even know what font was used, and whether or not I even need to credit it; unfortunately I don't have the original files, but many many fonts supplied to programs and people don't even require credit. It may even come under transformative fair use. In future I will check.
I'd also like to point out how I just said "'everyone else is doing it' is not an excuse here" and you immediately use that excuse.

As if there was only one single copyright law in the world... And yes, you violate cc-by if you don't mention the original author like it happens all the time. (No credits for pic, logo and font in your Melbourne POI Layer mod for example)

Btw every other picture in my mods is taken by myself - i've taken photos for more than 20 years now and even newspapers didn't care about credits or even pay more than once since then. They even cut off watermarks. Training of AI with public accessible pictures is not the most important problem for artist if you ask me. If you make a illustration and use a photo as reference you wouldn't mention or pay the photographer either.

"everyone else is doing it" is not an excuse here. Lots of creators, especially those who make lots of mods like JuanitoPeras, properly credit images, which is in line with CC BY license stipulations. All you need to do is search Wikimedia (or even Wikipedia itself) and read the license stipulations.

Creative Commons Licenses have language that allows for you to use them, the intention of the authors was literally for you to be able to use them for your own works. If you follow the language and stipulations of the license you won't be violating copyright.

Licensing of Microsoft Designer images is not the issue here, the issue is that Microsoft has scraped the internet for images and is regurgitating what it saw and stole from artists around the world, and you've just contributed to its success. You've taken value away from real people and contributed to the theft of their art for purposes they never imagined were possible.

My avatar image is native to Steam. It was redeemed through the Steam Points store as was made by either the developers of the game or by Steam, either way there was a licensing process between those parties. I know copyright law, that's why I care about this and that's why I prefer to use my own work, and properly credit images I use when I need to.

As if all other Mods had selftaken photos or creative commons picture with correct source credits. It's rather that here are dozens of copy right violations (even for cc-licenses).

In Microsoft Designer generated pictures are license-free for non commercial use and I really don't see why anyone should be harmed by this.

Btw: are you copyright holder for your avatar picture?

unironically it's stolen and regurgitated art. Just use a Creative Commons image for heaven's sake, it doesn't matter what the mod's content is.

As stated in description and quite obvious. I mean it's a POI-Layer...
