Long before the Mughals made their mark on India, a different band of invaders from the steppe conquered their way across the subcontinent and brought it to heel. The Delhi Sultanate rules vast swathes of India from the northwest, extending their reach to the Deccan in the south and Bengal in the east, bringing Islam to the region but remaining tolerant of pre-existing beliefs. The sultans ruled from Delhi for centuries, before finally succuming to infighting and looming invasions from the north - but not before making a lasting impact that remains visible to this day.
